Here is what Corey had to say about the experience:

Friends and cohorts-

A week ago Saturday, an epic race in the desert called the 2012 Abu Dhabi International Triathlon took place. This was the third year of the event attracting 1,800 athletes from 63 countries. As some of you may already know, Mike and I were two of the 301 entrants who signed up for the “long” course. This consisted of a 1.8 mile ocean swim in the Persian Gulf, followed by a 124 mile cycling segment, wrapped up with a 12.2 mile run along the marina. These distances are comparable to a long-course Ironman event. We spent a week in the UAE prior to the race trying to get the bodies prepared for the hot/arid conditions along with acclimating to a ten hour time zone difference. As the photos show, AD is not a bad place to be prepping for a race. Prior to that week, we’d spent the last three months training in the midst of a Nebraska winter for this desert event.

I was able to finish the course in 9 hours and 25 minutes, beating my goal by 5 minutes. Everything was going well until about 80 miles into the bike leg. Mentally, we were prepared for the for the heat, but the wind was a more formidable challenge. The wind picked up to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph. It was constantly shifting, so you had either a headwind or crosswind. This created considerable dust in the air along with the occasional sandblast to the face.

During the race, my thoughts went back to all of the laps in the swimming pool, the 90 mile Saturday morning rides in January when it was 38 degrees as well as the nighttime runs after work. Those were some of the mental steps employed along with prayerful meditation to help finish this one off.

Here are some links to the event along with photos we snapped in and around the UAE if you are interested:

Congrats Corey on your success at the triathlon! We are so glad that you call LRC home!

There are numerous advantages of joining a health club over trying to get fit on your own. Studies have shown that working out in a health-club like setting encourages participates to fit to a fitness routine and to try more to reach the end wellness goal. Also, members befriend others who are there and the setting becomes one that is encouraging, supporting, and social as well. All those reasons contribute to why people often choose clubs over working out alone. Of course, weather is a factor as well!

Another reason to join Lincoln Racquet Club is that our fitness staff will help members start off with a plan that is achievable and one which factors in your current fitness level.

Members have the option of a Tri-fit evaluation, which is a fitness assessment, blood pressure, medical history, and cardiovascular test. It utilizes a treadmill, strength and flexibility test, and a body composition reading. The health risk analysis includes heart disease risk and cancer factors and nutrition habits. If you have been out of a fitness routine, it is critical that you start at the right baseline level and not attempt to overdo it and possibly hurt yourself, or set yourself up at such an expectation that you end up getting discouraged and quit.

Our goal is to help all of our members reach their fitness and wellness lifestyle goals, and it is important to work up to the level while keeping in mind your starting point. Personal programs can be designed for weight management, cardiovascular exercise and strength training. That

We also encourage members to meet with fitness staff as often as you like so you are comfortable and confident in your fitness plan. Plus, we love seeing our members succeed!

We hope to hear from you soon so we can show you the Lincoln Racquet Club difference!

Once you have made the decision to join a health club, the next important decision may be how you choose to utilize the facilities and training offered. For many people, group classes and go-at-your-own pace is all you want and need. But other clients may prefer a highly personalized and one-on-one workout to both motivate as well as ensure an individualized experience. For those members, a personal trainer is the answer.

Why choose a trainer? As long as the club facilities and group fitness classes meet your needs, you are good to go. But a trainer can be a wonderful solution for people who either want to kick-start their fitness program, need help with determining what to do and when it comes to repetitions and routines, and to provide exact details to turn trouble areas into body strengths.

At Lincoln Racquet Club, we have qualified trainers who have YOUR goals and YOUR well-being in mind. A trainer will begin by providing you with a full assessment of what you want from the Lincoln Racquet Club experience and develop a program that not only is effective but will be safe and healthy for you as well. And our trainers aren’t just people who look good on the outside either. Our trainers are college educated and nationally certified. So you can be fully confident that they truly will get you from the starting block to the finish line at your personal pace.

If you’re still not sure about the advantages of a trainer, by all means come talk to us! We encourage you to have a private conversation with one of our staff trainers in a no-pressure setting so you can have a full understanding of the merits and costs.

Regardless of your path, come see what makes Lincoln Racquet Club the place to be for your fitness and fun experience!
